the road to Glazed Lists 1.7

Jesse Wilson
Hey guys --

Looks like it's time to set our goals for v. 1.7.
Please review the issues below and provide
your feedback about whether you think it's worthy
of the release.

Issue 330 - Varargs support
  https://glazedlists.dev.java.net/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=330
This is particularly difficult to do since our declawer tool
doesn't support varargs. Anyone interested in adding
varargs support to declawer?

Issue 267 - Memory leaks
  https://glazedlists.dev.java.net/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=267
This is much easier to work on now that we have the
new ListEventPublisher. I'm thinking we could add a
single method called 'weakify()' or something smarter
on the publisher that makes all references to a particular object
and downstream objects weak, so they'll get garbage collected
once they're out of scope.

Issue 306 - Maven support
  https://glazedlists.dev.java.net/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=306
Holger, can we close this?

Issue 332 - Autocomplete sucks on the Mac
  https://glazedlists.dev.java.net/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=332
I guess I'll have to look into this one. I've got some ideas
for some hacks. We should definitely have this for the next
release.

Issue 339 - SequenceDependenciesEventPublisher
  https://glazedlists.dev.java.net/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=339
I'll try to find time to make the Swing models and SWT models
use this instead of what they're doing currently. Then we can close
this bug. We're not going to support matchers since they don't
have a 'publisher' concept, and they don't really need a publisher
since the Matchers themselves are supposed to be immutable.

Issue 351 - Wiki
  https://glazedlists.dev.java.net/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=351
Almost done. I'd like to get attachments working still, then we're
almost completely all done.

Issue 320 - GroupingList elements as EventLists
  https://glazedlists.dev.java.net/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=320
I gotta look into this one. It's a hard problem.

Issue 321 - syncEventListToMultiMap()
  https://glazedlists.dev.java.net/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=321
Can we close this?

Issue 293 - KTable TableComparatorChooser
  https://glazedlists.dev.java.net/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=293
We've left our SWT users out in the cold for a long time. I think
it's soon time to fix this.

Please look over the bugs database and tell me whichever other
bugs you think should be up for consideration in 1.7:

Also - when would you like to get the release out? Middle of August?
End of August?

Cheers,
Jesse

Hey Jesse,

Issue 321 - syncEventListToMultiMap() can be closed. To my knowledge there is no outstanding work and no bugs filed against it at this time.

I'd love to handle Issue 332, but I just don't have access to a Mac anywhere, let along one with a dev. environment on it. We already have specific code in AutoCompleteSupport that is meant to handle sizing the popup appropriately, so positioning it within that code seems trivial.

Do we actually have users taking advantage of our KTable extension?

None of the other bugs excite me too much at this point. I personally think we could ship a 1.7 without any of them. But, I understand the desire to try to patch things up before pushing something out.

Also, Jesse, do you wanna put a Techsmith logo somewhere in our "tools provided by" section, since they were nice enough to give us a free license for Camtasia?

regarding issue 330:
I forgot to consider the declawer when proposing the bugfix.
Under these circumstances let's defer it until declawer is able
to handle varargs (and annotations).

regarding issue 306:
I think we can close it. If we decide to extend maven support we
should open a new issue.

From my point of view issues 332, 339 and 351 should be fixed for 1.7.

What about issue 325 - JFreeChart support?
Is this work in progress or complete?

I'll test the latest version with our application in detail
when I get back to work (middle of August).
Stability and performance are the prevailing aspects for us
besides new features.

Jesse, to understand more about treedeltas and sequencedependencies and
their differences to the old blockdeltas + graphdependencies, it would be
great to have an overview on our new system docu wiki page.
This would not only be interesting for contributors but also for
some users, I think.
From the release notes you could refer to this page for details.

Just my two cents,
Holger
